Error in yesterday's blog. The iPads will be used for very specific activities, from time to time in math, French, and for research.  They are a privilege and an 'extra' so only students modelling good work habits will be using them.

Tomorrow there is no assembly  and tomorrow we are going on a field trip to deliver good wishes.

Miss:Newton had to leave sick at lunch and we had a sub but she will be in tomorrow hopefully.

Wednesday 17 December 2014

Today in school there was a very loud sound and the room shook.  The bang and the shaking was very loud and quite shocking. As a precaution we left the room and continued working in the library. Mr. Woodhurst came immediately to investigate and concluded that it is a normal 'sluffing' of snow off the sloped gym roof onto the roof of the classroom section of the school. It was very loud because it had built up over a long period of time and was overhanging with a large accumulation of snow. The building is designed specifically for this and the supports are cantilevered to deal with this stress. Unfortunately we didn't know that there would be an accompanying sound and shaking!  I tried to reassure students but some were quite upset about the situation and were happy to work in the library for the rest of the day. Mr. Hooker came to talk to our class to explain and reassure the students.  If you have further questions please tell me.

Grade 6's have the microscope thank you mark in their agendas. Many students didn't follow clearly discussed and reviewed assignment criteria, and received lower than expected marks.

We did a simile poem today. Students are to use 'like' twice and 'as' twice in the poem, example below. The poem is due Monday.

EXAMPLE:

Simile Poem- School Today

School today had its ups and downs, just like a roller coaster
except the downs were more in number than the ups

A bang and vibration above sound like an earthquake
or a giant monster crow landing above us

Kids off task in the library, as noisy as a bunch of laughing hyenas
except that hyenas don't need to learn like our students do

But today is over, as done as dinner
And tomorrow is a new day of love and fun

our weekend so you will not have to hand it in on Thursday.

Chocolate Truffles were a treat today! Here is the simple recipe
200g (175 ml) chocolate chips
1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy whipping cream (or coconut milk)
1 tsp vanilla (optional)
1/2 tsp salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 cup (approximately) rice krispies, crushed up to be 1/4 original size
1/2 cup cocoa to roll the truffles in.
Chocolate Truffles: melt chocolate chips in a medium sized pot, add cream and vanilla  Bring just to a boil. Stir with a rubber spatula until smooth. Boil at low heat for 3 minutes and until all buts are smooth. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt - makes a big and good difference! Let cool outside until it the mix is like play dough or a bit softer. Add the rice crisps and stir in. Working quickly to form the balls and roll each in a bowl of cocoa powder. You might have to pause and re-cool the mixture, and the heat from your hands messes things up if you take too long making each ball perfect. STORE IN THE FRIDGE OR FREEZER.
HAVE A GREAT DAY (:

The grade 6's have a quiz tomorrow on order of operations, multiples, factors.

Volleyball permissions slips were sent home today.

Tuesday 6 times table test, grade 6's have 15 seconds, grade 7's have 13 seconds.

Climax paragraph due Wednesday. Students need to write the paragraph (or more) that will be in their rough draft where the problem is solved=CLIMAX. For example, in the story of a plant taking over the world, it would be the moment that the scientist figures out the chemical that halts the plant's growth. The scene should be written in such a way that the audience feels like they are there. As many senses as possible should be used.
Here is an example:  Dr. Dread blinked back his tears, tasting their salty goodness as he saw for the first time the plant being depleted of energy, dying before his eyes. He wiped the tears away and as if in slow motion, watched his hand dial the president to tell her the good news.  He screamed into the phone, "I've done it, I've finally killed the plant!" The phone felt hot in his hands as he listened to the president's own sobs of joy at his news. He picked up his phone and showed the president a life steam video of the plant reacting to the sodium chloride in the petri dish. "Watch, see how the stem is wilting, the leaves withering! That is death my dear leader, death! We have done it!"

ACTION REQUIRED- PARENTS:
Please help me get ready for an exciting component to my French class. Please go to www.duolingo.com and register your child for this on-line French learning tool. Please then write their username and password in the front of their agenda for use in school. I like this program because it is free and has students reading, writing, speaking and listening to French.

Remember, gym strip and running shoes at school for gym, thank you.

Small Things Art Project:
Students have one month to create a collection of small things that are of one theme. They should be everyday, low-cost items gathered from around the house, community, or from friends. Students should not be buying things for this assignment.

The art part is how the student chooses to display their collection.  It should be done creatively and with some sort of pattern. The display should be pleasing to the eye and should include a title, year, & full name of student (in pen at the bottom of the display).
-The title, date, & name are also considered part of the artistic makeup of the assignment.
-A 5+ sentence explanation of the assignment is also due. This written component should explain why the student chose the particular item for the project, where the items were found, how the display was chosen, discussion about any challenges that occurred, etc.

There will be no further class time for the assignment. Completed works are due on October 29th. We viewed works from Douglas Coupland’s Collection of Small Things at the Vancouver Art Gallery, & learned what makes a work interesting & thought provoking.

Parents will be invited to view the class exhibit on  October 30th

Creative merit of items and the display                             /10

*Late assignments will lose marks
Scoring must be attached to written component (-2)

Payment for a Hard Day’s Work:
Students will ‘earn’ pay for a job well done at school. This type of incentive plan helps kids understand their responsibilities as a student and to see the connection between school and their future as an employable citizen.
To earn their day’s pay students must:
use class time wisely
-not cause disruptions to learning
-be respectful to each other
-;bring  agenda to school signed each day
-get home homework done on time
Student may also earn extra pay by taking on extra jobs in the classroom. Students can apply and will be hired for positions such as accounting, washroom sign in/out, blog writing, and assignment collection. These jobs are short term contracts, & students will have an opportunity to apply again after Christmas.

Student bonuses for outstanding work ethic will also be periodically awarded. Students will use their hard earned wages on twice yearly auctions of exciting extras from around my home and yours. Please save up your knick knacks for these auctions.  As well, students must pay to go to the washroom during class time. ($1 a trip).  Washroom disruptions add up when you consider there are 26 students in the room going each day.

Hard working students will earn $10/ day and they will be paid out each Friday afternoon.  Auctions will be at Christmas and in late June.

Friday 26 September 2014

In today's agenda you will find the mark for the Crystal Ball. Also, there is an insurance form and a Terry Fox pledge form.  Another option is the coin drive we are having! The school run is Monday, October 6th, 1pm.

If you are an expert on any of these subjects, please let me know!!

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Greetings lovely parents!

Thank you for the fabulous students that you have lent me for this year. We are off to a great start getting to know each other and mastering classroom expectations.

The lost and found is ENORMOUS, please drop by the school sometime before the end of the day on Friday. After that they are all off to the thrift store.

Agendas are $7 this year, please send the money to school.

Students had their first band session today, and a letter was sent home, please read it thoroughly. Mr. Rogers is asking that students bring a one inch ringed binder for this class. I am sorry that this item didn't make the supply list.  If you don't have any, he has a few binders that students can have.

A tentative time table has been sent home for you to keep. It shows an approximate schedule for different subjects. Note PE/DPA days, gym strips will be needed on those days.

PARENT VOLUNTEER REQUEST:
Starting in October I am looking for parents or grandparents who can spare 30 minutes each week from 12:45 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons. At this time They would help students as they share their book club questions and answers.   Please respond via email or in the agendas if this can work for you.

I have lent a number of students binders, duotangs, and loose leaf so that they can start the year. Please still send your child with supplies so that they can give them back to me. There is a supply list posted on this blog.

Thank you!

Supplies-
You may have received a supply list, but it is generic. This one here is more specific to my classroom.

Please look around your house for the things on the list, there is no need to go buy a bunch of new stuff.

FYI- I collect and store the extra supplies (not in use each day) in a ziplock bag for each student. This way supplies are not lost or borrowed. When students need a new pencil or more looseleaf, they come to me and get their ziplock bag of supplies.

2 packages of good quality pencils, I recommend Staedler. They are the blue pencils with a white eraser. They last longer, don't have a weak lead, and are a superior quality to other pencils. Please scratch away a strip of the blue paint near the eraser, and write your child's name in pen on the side of each pencil.

3+ white erasers. Please put your child's name on each one.

7 Duotangs-  2 labelled Spelling, Journal, 5 for projects later in the year.

1 inch (or larger) binder, with dividers labelled- Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, French, and Other.  Please write the student name on the spine and front.

1 basic calculator, student name on it.

1 package of coloured pencils, basic colours, student name on each one. You can use old ones from the year before, no need to buy a new package if you can find the basic colours.

2 fine tip black markers, please put student name on each one.

3+ glue sticks, please put student name on each.

1 pair decent scissors, name on the handle in permanent marker.

1 package fine tip felt coloured markers, name on each.

1 large size scrapbook with manila paper (yellow). A standard scrapbook that you remember from your childhood. Please put your child's name on the front.

1 box of kleenex.

1 pencil box to hold the little bits and pieces mentioned here.

2 black or blue pens, name written on each one.

1 red pen, name on it.

1 bottle of white glue, no need for a name on this one, I collect them and store for art projects.

1 pencil sharpener with reservoir to hold the shavings. A good quality one is essential.

Approximately 250 sheets of looseleaf paper. You can put about 20 sheets in each section of the binder mentioned above, and bring the rest to class.

1 long ruler with centimetres and millimetres, please label with student name.

1 protractor (plastic semi-circle tool to measure degrees), name on it, that's all you need, not the whole math set.

1 highlighter marker.

1 large ziplock bag, the biggest one you find at the grocery story, clearly write your child's name on it.
