needs to be kept on file at the office.
If your child goes home from time to time, please write it in their
agenda each time. Remind all students to sign in and out at the office each
time they leave at lunch. Students going home are asked to not come back until
12:45 p.m. in order to not disrupt students eating in the classrooms.
Terry Fox Run: Monday, October 6th at 1pm.
We have sent home pledge sheets and we are doing a coin drive at school. Please
send any change for this great cause, thank you.
Last week’s
student(s) of the Week were Shea Bibby and Hannah Vandenberg-Clark. They
have helped other students without being asked. Thank you grade 7 leaders!
Please make sure students have headphones at school, labeled and in a small bag, thank you!
Last year’s AR
winners were announced; the top grade 5 reader was Devyn Gale! As well, Carlos Serrouya and Alex Jay
placed 1st and 2nd in the Caribou Math Contest last year
(for grade 5 students). Well done boys!
ACTION REQUIRED-
PARENTS:
Please help me get ready for an exciting component to my
French class. Please go to www.duolingo.com
and register your child for this on-line French learning tool. Please then
write their username and password in the front of their agenda for use in
school. I like this program because it is free and has students reading,
writing, speaking and listening to French.
Remember, gym strip and running shoes at school for gym,
thank you.
Small Things Art Project:
Students have one month to create a
collection of small things that are of one theme. They should be everyday,
low-cost items gathered from around the house, community, or from friends.
Students should not be buying things for this assignment.
The art part is how the student
chooses to display their collection.
It should be done creatively and with some sort of pattern. The display
should be pleasing to the eye and should include a title, year, & full name
of student (in pen at the bottom of the display).
-The title, date, & name are also
considered part of the artistic makeup of the assignment.
-A 5+ sentence explanation of the
assignment is also due. This written component should explain why the student
chose the particular item for the project, where the items were found, how the
display was chosen, discussion about any challenges that occurred, etc.
There will be no further class time
for the assignment. Completed works are due on October 29th. We
viewed works from Douglas Coupland’s Collection of Small Things at the
Vancouver Art Gallery, & learned what makes a work interesting &
thought provoking.
Parents will be invited to view the
class exhibit on October 30th
Small Things Art Assignment will be graded as follows /20
Creative merit of items and the
display /10
Care taken for a neat & organized
all aspects /5
Name, Date, Title done with
care/creativity /1
Written Component /4
*Late assignments will lose marks
Scoring must be attached to written
component (-2)
Payment for a Hard Day’s
Work:
Students will ‘earn’ pay for a job well done at school.
This type of incentive plan helps kids understand their responsibilities as a
student and to see the connection between school and their future as an
employable citizen.
To earn their day’s
pay students must:
use class time wisely
-not cause disruptions to learning
-be respectful to each other
-;bring agenda
to school signed each day
-get home homework done on time
Student may also earn extra pay by taking on extra jobs in
the classroom. Students can apply and will be hired for positions such as
accounting, washroom sign in/out, blog writing, and assignment collection.
These jobs are short term contracts, & students will have an opportunity to
apply again after Christmas.
Student bonuses for outstanding work ethic will also be
periodically awarded. Students will use their hard earned wages on twice yearly
auctions of exciting extras from around my home and yours. Please save up your
knick knacks for these auctions.
As well, students must pay to go to the washroom during class time. ($1
a trip). Washroom disruptions add
up when you consider there are 26 students in the room going each day.
Hard working students will earn $10/ day and they will be
paid out each Friday afternoon.
Auctions will be at Christmas and in late June.

I have sent home a year plan of topics to be covered in each subject. Please note that it is a rough plan, and changes might occur. One side is for grade 6, the other for grade 7.
If you are an expert on any of these subjects, please let me know!!

Greetings lovely parents!
Thank you for the fabulous students that you have lent me for this year. We are off to a great start getting to know each other and mastering classroom expectations.
The lost and found is ENORMOUS, please drop by the school sometime before the end of the day on Friday. After that they are all off to the thrift store.
Agendas are $7 this year, please send the money to school.
Students had their first band session today, and a letter was sent home, please read it thoroughly. Mr. Rogers is asking that students bring a one inch ringed binder for this class. I am sorry that this item didn't make the supply list. If you don't have any, he has a few binders that students can have.
A tentative time table has been sent home for you to keep. It shows an approximate schedule for different subjects. Note PE/DPA days, gym strips will be needed on those days.
PARENT VOLUNTEER REQUEST:
Starting in October I am looking for parents or grandparents who can spare 30 minutes each week from 12:45 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons. At this time They would help students as they share their book club questions and answers. Please respond via email or in the agendas if this can work for you.
I have lent a number of students binders, duotangs, and loose leaf so that they can start the year. Please still send your child with supplies so that they can give them back to me. There is a supply list posted on this blog.
Thank you!
